Benvenuto!

Welcome to FotoCapito, a site dedicated to understanding better photography and photographs: how to recognize good ones and bad ones, and in the process learning to make better photos.

What's New

Equipment Kits

In the equipment section we’ve written a few articles for beginners and new photography students related to assembling photographic equipment. Please check them out and let us know what you think of the articles and the idea in general. We intend to add product reviews and other features to the section. However, it’s not our intention to try to compete will sites like Digital Photography Review (dpreview.com). We hope to offer a different perspective on equipment.

Criticisims

It may be a bit presumptious on the surface, but we’ve taken to writing criticisms of our photographs in the photos section. We’re criticizing them in the true sense, though. We are analyzing them and explaining them from an artistic perspective, using them as teaching aides for new photographers. If you have comments to add to any of our criticisms, please email us so that we may include them.

Books on Photography

There are so many books on photography—and none of them are cheap. One of the features we want to provide to our visitors is book recommendations. To start, we’ve set up a database and the web pages to display information on books that we own. We’re now adding many books that we don’t own by believe to be good. Once we’re finished with this level of information, we intend to write reviews of each book in our database. That will be a daunting task, but we feel it will be worth doing.

Solid Leica M Reference

Although an old book and maybe not as current as one would like, this book is not out of date and won’t be so for many years. If you’re new to Leica cameras, especially if you’re thinking of buying a used, older model Leica, you definitely should get a copy of this book. Even if you’re going to get a new model, though, you’ll still find value in this book. So, get a copy before you buy a Leica camera and put some time in reading it carefully, referring back to it as you shop.

Straightforward Nude Photography

If you want to learn about lighting and photography, look to other books. If you have lighting down and just want to be able to take pictures of nudes, you just need someone to tell you where to put all of your equipment and where to position the model. Do that enough times and you’re a photographer specializing in nudes. This book will help you do this, if you experiment with it.

Latest Musings

Below is a list of the latest musings on photography related topics:

Making Progress

Over the past eight years I have been seriously involved in photography, but sometimes I don't feel like I'm making progress. It's useful sometimes for me to compare photos that I have taken over the years so as to see how I'm progressing. In this post I compare three photos I took of the same subject, the colosseum in Rome, from about the same spot.

Using Reluctantly Mobile Phones for Photography

In the past few months I have been dating a young woman, a woman who is much younger than me. There are advantages and disavantages to dating a younger woman. One advantage is that she pushes me to do things that I would not do normally. She has gotten me to use my mobile telephone to take photographs. As an advanced photographer, I have always disdained this idea. In my opinion, mobile telephones are not meant to be cameras. They can take pictures, but one should use a camera, not a telephone for photography. Still, love and sex can change a man's perspective on things.

It's all about the sensor

People will ask me sometimes why I use a film camera instead of a digital camera. I explain to them that each camera has a sensor for recording an image. A digital camera uses an electronic image sensor, which is reusable. A film camera uses generally a rectangular piece of a strip of film, which may be used only once. There are some advantages and disadvantages to each. However, at the basic level, different types of cameras have different types of sensors—electronic or film. The type of sensor it uses will effect the results of the initial image.
