Newcomer Books

We classify a newcomer as a person who has an interest in photography, but has no knowledge of photography theory, camera workings, composition, or other factors. It is unlikely that a person who is interested in photography and has come to this site has had no exposure to photography. It is likely that a newcomer would have had experience taking photographs with a camera, but has done nothing more than simply pointed the camera and pressed the button—and has not considered the results and how to improve them.

Beginners Guide to Lighting

Instructional book for beginners on using lighting, primarily in a studio, for photography.

Technical & Skill Levels

We’ve introduced two more rating systems: One is related to the technical level of books. This is an indication of how technical is the content of the book. Books that focus on theory (e.g., details on the physics of light) and get into technical details (e.g., detailed explanations of the functioning of image sensors at the pixel level) get more stars in the technical area. The other rating scale added recently is related to skill level. Basically, a one-star rating indicates the book is for beginners. A five-star rating is given for a book suited for advanced photographers.
